Weekly Book Review No. 23

Whenever I'm in contact with people who don't read a lot but want to delve a little deeper into the meaning and purpose of life, I recommend this book. Laurent Gounelle manages to raise so many questions inside the reader in only 131 pages that you emerge wiser and with a lot of input.

But let's start from the beginning. Laurent Gounelle, a modern philosopher and sociologist, takes us on a fascinating journey to Bali with the small but beautiful book "The Man Who Wanted to Be Happy" and tells with the main character Julien a story about the habit of limiting ourselves, the power of thinking and how freedom is just an inner process.

When I read this book for the first time, one of the most impressive passengers for me was the one in which the main character Julien was given the task by the wise healer to get a clear NO from people on the vacation island of Bali for a request for help.

Julien was traveling with the inner attitude that no one wants to help him anyway. So he was to get a clear no from different people 3 times. He worked on many limiting thoughts while trying to accomplish this task. He was ashamed to ask for help, had an inner block to fulfill this "stupid" task of the healer and was anyway convinced that nobody would help him.

There are few books which I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone. But this little jewel of literature is, from my point of view, one of the most profound books I have ever read.
