The Significance of the Equinox

In many cultures around the globe people believe that real date of the season change is not calendar first days of January, March, June and September, but a day which is between 21st and 23rd days of these months. And this is also the time of Solstices and Equinoxes.

The word Equinox is derived from the Latin aequinoctium, from aequus (equal) and nox (genitive of noctis) (night). On the day of an equinox, daytime and nighttime are of approximately equal duration all over the planet.

Many famous prehistoric monuments such as Stonehenge, Mayan and Egyptian pyramids, were built in perfect alignment with the sun movement to honor Solstices and Equinoxes.

In the yogic tradition, this is a day when one has the best possibility of transcending the limitations of one’s physical longings.

Sadhguru, famous modern Yogi and Mystic explains that during Equinox the influences of the magnetic field of northern and southern poles upon the planet are at equilibrium. For a human being, the significance of this day is that the masculine and feminine are at perfect balance – “within our own system, there is a level playing field”.

«The Equinox is a day to bring balance, to not be identified with this or that, not even being a man or a woman, not even being human or another creature – just to sit and throb as life.»
- Sadhguru

Masculine and feminine are not about being physically male or female. Certain qualities in nature have been identified as masculine. Certain other qualities have been identified as feminine. You may be a man, but it is possible that the feminine may be dominant in you. Or, you may be a woman, but the masculine may be dominant in you. Only when these two qualities happen in balance within a human being, can one live a life of fulfillment.

We are moving towards autumn Equinox which will take place on September 22nd. This year in Northern hemisphere it will be exactly at 21:20. This point will signal the start of autumn season and the night will gradually start conquering the day.

All ancient cultures and civilizations honored this day in various ways. In many traditions autumn Equinox was dedicated to the time of harvest.

In Astrology on the day of the Autumn Equinox, the sun enters the sign of Libra – the constellation of the balance or scales. And the full moon nearest to the autumn Equinox is called the Harvest Moon and farmers would harvest their crops by then.

One of the most beautiful ancient myths about Autumn Equinox comes from Greece. In Ancient Greek mythology, the start of autumn is linked to the story of the abduction of Persephone, a goddess who was abducted from her mother, harvest goddess Demeter, and taken to the underworld to become the wife of Hades, the god-king of the underworld.

After a period of mourning and struggle, Demeter eventually got her daughter back from Hades, but only for nine months of the year. Every fall, Persephone would return to the underworld to spend three months with Hades. During these months, Demeter refused to use her divine skills to make plants grow, explaining why we have three months of winter every year.

At this time of balance may you have much to celebrate and count your blessings as we stop and relax and enjoy what we have created through our personal harvests, whether they be from tending our gardens, careers, families, or any projects we have been putting efforts into.
