Hannes Schmid is an artist and photographer. More than a million pictures testify to his successful career in the advertising, fashion and entertainment industry. He became famous with the motif of the "Marlboro Man"..
Since 2012, he has been working for the poorest people in Cambodia with his aid organization Smiling Gecko. In doing so, he goes his own way. He focuses on sustainable help for self-help. Jobs and training positions are created in the areas of education, agriculture, handicrafts/production and tourism/gastronomy. Through their economic orientation, these cluster projects should be able to support and finance themselves after a start-up period. This creates an exemplary model of a functioning rural community that provides people with education, decent work and sustainable income.
In our conversation, Hannes Schmid tells us about his fateful encounter with a mutilated child beggar, which was the start of his commitment and set in motion a movement that is unparalleled. He takes us on the journey of Smiling Gecko. He shows how he overcame setbacks that would have made others give up long ago.
Listening to Hannes Schmid, you can feel his deep passion and commitment to this unique and forward-looking development project.
