Weekly Book Review No. 13

Look at that, huh? Mark Manson has probably written the book with the most provocative title of the decade. Because he prefers the unvarnished perspective and because he thinks that not everyone is exceptional at everything. And that's a good thing!

Mark Manson: "The subtle art of not giving a fuck"

I admit that the title was certainly an extremely helpful marketing tool. But upon closer inspection and reading, Mark Manson delivers what he promises.

One major newspaper refers to Mark as the drunk in town who spent too much time in the philosophy section of a library. That makes me grin in agreement. His writing doesn't mince words, is jarring, and is refreshingly different in this whole cozy self-help, optimization, and self-pity corner of popular psychology.

In addition, and this is crucial for me, Manson propagates more serenity towards one's own shortcomings and weaknesses. With this and by focusing on my strengths, what is important to me and what I want to concentrate on, I can release a great deal of potential and resources. And, last but not least, take care of how I can use my energy for something meaningful instead of investing it in something I don't really care about. Just because someone says that this is "the thing" at the moment.

Some insights from reading are: Realize that you are going to die and acknowledge finitude. Failure is important for personal growth. Problems are not always tragic, but possibilities. Difficult times are necessary. Change is the only constant in life. Be grateful for what you have right now. Your energy is finite, invest wisely.

In the whole social media optimization and self-promotion craze, this book sets a contemporary, realistic and refreshing counterpoint and gives courage to want to face your own life with all its possibilities, highs and lows. You will get food for thought and views from a new perspective, probably to look at familiar topics from a side that you may not yet know. This could also lead you to lose yourself less in trivial distractions and be more engaged with your vision and central things in your life.

Have a great time reading.

"Self-improvement is really about: prioritizing better values, choosing better things to give a fuck about. Because when you give better fucks, you get better problems. And when you get better problems, you get a better life.”
